In honor of logging 29,000 volunteer hours over 50 years of service, Torrance Memorial Medical Center honored 91-year-old Mimi Brody Tuesday morning.
The hospital's staff threw a tea party for their longest-serving volunteer, and everyone in attendance wore fascinator hats in vibrant colors, while eating pastries and drinking Champagne.
Brody first began volunteering at Torrance Memorial in 1969, back when doctors and nurses were still allowed to smoke on the hospital campus.
It was a time when Brody and other volunteers still wore pink candy-striper uniforms.
"I am amazed at Mimi’s longevity and so grateful for her commitment to Torrance Memorial," said Mary Matson, director of service excellence. "I wish I had half as much energy as she does...Basically, we all hope to be like Mimi when we grow up."
What's next for Brody? She is currently recovering from back surgery, but you'll seen find her back in the hospital gift shop where, among her many other tasks, she makes sure the shelves are stocked with the cutest stuffed animals.
