Off-Duty LAPD Officer Killed in Motorcycle Crash Identified

An off-duty Los Angeles police officer who was killed in a motorcycle crash in Torrance on Saturday was identified as a 24-year-old Carson man, officials said.

Erick Alcaraz was riding his red motorcycle southbound on Western Avenue about 5 p.m. when a driver of a white KIA tried to turn left onto Western Avenue from 234th Street (map) and collided with the motorcycle, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Firefighters responded to the crash, but Alcaraz died of his injuries, according to a news release from the Torrance Police Department. Alcaraz was 18 months on the job, Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. He was assigned to the Southwest Division.

Sunday would have been his first day assigned to patroling the West LA area.

Alcaraz was a Marine and leaves behind a mother and father.

Police said a 53-year-old woman was alone in the KIA at the time of the crash. She was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Western Avenue was closed in both directions between Sepulveda Boulevard and 235th Street for approximately four and a half hours for the investigation.
