Off-Duty Police Officer Exchanges Gunfire With Suspected Gunman After Witnessing Fatal Shooting in San Pedro

An off-duty police officer chased a man suspected of fatally shooting another man in a car-to-car shooting in San Pedro early Saturday morning, police said.

The shooting was reported just after 4:30 a.m. near Gaffey and 12th streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department Harbor Division.

A male victim was struck by gunfire in a car-to-car shooting and later died, police said.

The officer saw the shooter and followed his vehicle until the gunman stopped near Santa Cruz Street and N. Cabrillo Avenue. The gunman then got out of his car and fired several rounds at the officer. The officer, who was not hit, fired back at the suspect.

The suspected gunman fled from the scene and could not be located, according to the LAPD.

Police did not have a description of the outstanding shooter. The vehicle was only described as an SUV.

No officer was injured during the shooting.
