Deputy Injured During Pursuit When Weapon Accidentally Discharges

A sheriff's deputy was wounded after his gun accidentally discharged while he was involved in a pursuit early Wednesday morning in Wilmington, authorities said.

The shooting was reported around 4 a.m. near Pacific Coast Highway just south of Alameda Street after the deputy pursued a vehicle, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Officials said the deputy, who is assigned to the Carson station, was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The LASD Homicide Division was handling the investigation. The division investigates all deputy-involved shootings, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The deputy was either drawing the weapon or in the process of doing so when it discharged, according to authorities. The deputy suffered a non-life threatening wound to his calf.

A female passenger was in custody, but the male driver of the stolen vehicle remained on the run early Wednesday afternoon.  The man was last seen running from the vehicle and through a neighborhood in Wilmington
