Officers opened fire on an auto theft suspect early Monday near a coin-operated laundry in Santa Ana.

The suspect was hospitalized with what authorities described as non-life threatening injuries.

The man exited his vehicle as officers approached in the 3000 block of South Bristol Street at about 12:20 a.m., according to Santa Ana police Corporal Anthony Bertagna. Officers directed a spotlight at the man and noticed he was carrying a handgun, according to police.

A firearm was recovered at the location, police said.

"He was a parolee at-large," said Bertagna. "The vehicle itself was a stolen vehicle. Obviously, a parolee in possession of a firearm is another heavy charge."

Officers responded to the site after receiving a resident's report of suspicious activity near the laundry.
