A Riverside police officer killed an alleged gunman after a firefight late Friday, authorities said.

The coroner identified the man as Adolfo Ramirez, 37, or Riverside.

The shooting occurred just before 11:30 p.m. in the 3000 block of East La Cadena Drive, near the intersection of Vine and 1st streets, in Riverside. The officer was not wounded.

Before the shooting, the officer was on patrol when he pulled over to confront a man who was getting into a car. As the officer approached, the suspect pulled out a gun and fired three shots at the officer - two that struck the patrol car and one that struck another parked vehicle, Riverside police Lt. Larry Gonzalez said.

The officer returned fire, killing the man, Gonzalez said.
