A police officer saved the life of a motorcyclist who had a leg partially severed in a crash in Santa Ana, when he wrapped the biker's mangled leg with a tourniquet to the injured leg, police said Saturday.
The motorist stayed at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Warner Avenue and Parton Street, said Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department.
It was not immediately if the motorist was arrested or cited, according to Cmdr. Jeffrey Smith of the Santa Ana Police Department.
An SUV made a left turn in front of the motorcyclist about 7:45 p.m. Friday, sending the rider skidding into the gutter, Bertagna said. The impact of the crash partially severed one of the motorcyclist's legs.
The motorcyclist was expected to survive.
Each Santa Ana police patrol vehicle is equipped with a tourniquet and bandages, and officers have been trained how to use them.
