Police Officer Shoots, Kills Dog During Man's Arrest in West Covina

Police shot and killed a dog while trying to arrest a man Monday at his West Covina home after the dog attacked an officer, officials said.

Two West Covina Police Department officers located a man wanted for warrants around 11 a.m. in front of his residence located on the 1800 block of Jennifer Place.

The suspect ran away from the officers, who chased him into his house and then out into the backyard.

When the suspect began fighting with the officers, a large dog bit one of the officers in the leg. The second officer shot the dog when it charged at him, officials said.

The officer who was bitten was not seriously injured and was expected to recover, officials said.

Ramon Cardenas Lopez, 38, of West Covina, was booked and held on $85,000 bail for battery upon a peace officer and resisting arrest. He was also booked for outstanding warrants for resisting arrest on a previous case, drug possession and driving on a suspended license, officials said.

He is scheduled to appear at West Covina Superior Court on Wednesday.
