Man Wanted in Carjacking Shot, Killed on Rooftop

Officers use a fire truck ladder to access the roof of an apartment complex, where they encounter the subject

Police shot and killed a man on a Long Beach rooftop early Tuesday after a traffic stop turned into a foot pursuit, authorities said.

The subject, whose name was not released, was wanted on suspicion of carjacking and was believed to have had a gun, a Long Beach police dispatcher said.

Officers stopped a vehicle about 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Walnut Avenue and 3rd Street and one man fled from officers on foot, according to Long Beach police spokeswoman Cynthia Arrona. Officers interviewed passengers of the vehicle and found out that the man who ran was sought on a "felony armed and dangerous warrant," Arrona said in an email.

Police searched the area and located the man on a roof after receiving a call from an apartment resident in the 400 block of Nebraska Avenue. Officers climbed a fire truck ladder to access the roof, where they encountered the subject.

Police did not disclose information regarding how many officers opened fire.

Long Beach Police Deputy Chief Robert Luna confirmed Tuesday morning that the subject was dead and the body remained at the scene. The confirmation came after initial police reports conflicted, with some officials saying the suspect was dead and others saying he was hospitalized.
