Stolen Car Attempts to Ram Police, Escapes Through Officer Gunfire

The car was later found abandoned in the Huntington Harbour area of Huntington Beach

Police are searching for the occupants of a stolen car that tried to ram two officers after a pursuit through Huntington Beach, then escaped after gunshots were fired Sunday morning.

The car, a green Honda Accord, was found abandoned in a cul-de-sac near Warner Avenue and Algonquin Street in the Huntington Harbour area, according to Huntington Beach Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Marlatt. It was unclear if the car's two or three occupants were hit by officers' gunfire.

Officers first made contact with the car, which was later determined to be stolen, when it failed to yield to a traffic stop in the area of Edinger Avenue and Edwards Street, Marlatt said.

Officers shot at the car on Davenport Island, a marina community in the Harbour, after police made what Marlatt called a "felony stop." Police got out of their vehicle, then the car spun around and attempted to ram them.

The car drove off, but was discovered a short way away as police scoured the area, Marlatt said. It was unoccupied, and bullet holes could be seen in the windshield.

Police believe the suspects fled the scene, but were investigating at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday.  Because it was an officer-involved shooting, the Orange County Sheriff's Department will be investigating, Marlatt said.
