Officials Gather to Show Support for NFL Football at Proposed Stadium Site

The project includes a 168-acre stadium property next to the 405 Freeway that could house the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders.

City officials and other supporters gathered Friday in favor of a plan to secure an NFL stadium in Carson that could bring two new teams to the Southland.

Six mayors from neighboring cities joined a news conference where officials unveiled a large banner that read "Future Home of Professional Football" and renamed a street "Stadium Way" at the proposed site the location.

The project includes a 168-acre stadium property next to the 405 Freeway that could house the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders.

In April, Carson lawmakers unanimously voted to approve a Chargers-Raiders plan to build and share a $1.7 billion football stadium just north of Carson's civic center.

The relocation of the teams is still under consideration by the NFL and requires NFL owners' approval. The decision is predicted for the end of the year or the beggining of next year.

"This is not just about Carson and pro football," said Carson Mayor Al Robles at Friday's news conference. "This is about bringing pro football back big-time to Southern California."

An NFL team has not played in the Los Angeles area since 1994, when the Raiders and Rams relocated.
