Owners of Barking Dogs Face $100 Fine

Expect big fines for noisy pets

Noisy diva dogs and howling hounds could prove to be money-makers for cash-strapped Los Angeles.

The L.A. City Council voted to put some teeth in its pet laws.  And if you've got a party animal, you're going to pay.

Animal Services officers handed out nearly 20,000 notices last year to pet owners who violated city barking dog and leash laws.  But there was no fine.

That's changing.

The council realized it could rake in $2 million, if those warnings came with a $100 fine. And, habitual offenders could face stiffer fines.

Now a bark could take a big bite out of you wallet.

LA's municipal code says pet owners cannot let a barking dog bother neighbors. It also prohibits keeping dogs, cats, rabbits and other critters more than 35 feet from their house or allow a dog to wander the streets without a leash.
