Only You Can Prevent Wildfires: Tips for Fire Prevention

Officials are taking extra precautions against fires in Southern California, with a current red flag alert warning of increased wildfire threat amid a fall heat wave.

But while firefighters are deployed throughout the area, here are some tips from the Los Angeles County Fire Department that you can use to help prevent the spread of fire in your area:

  • Create space around your home, including clearing debris from trees or brush within 100 feet. A common danger during fires results from embers igniting this debris and spreading to your home.
  • Blow out all candles when leaving the room or house, and keep candles at least a foot away from anything flammable while in use. Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the house. (Flameless candles are also a good and safe option)
  • Before digging anywhere, such as under streets or in your yard for landscaping, call Underground Service Alert at 811 to avoid pipeline damage. Customer-owned gas lines are not marked and could be located anywhere.
  • Replace shingle roofs with tile or other fire-resistant materials, and plant fire-resistant landscaping around the house.
  • Store matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Never toss a cigarette out of a car window or into the street, even if you think it's extinguished.
  • Put working smoke alarms on each floor of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
  • Prepare a list and cache of items to take with you should you need to evacuate, focusing especially on essentials like medication, phone chargers and cash.
  • Know the best, efficient ways out of your neighborhood in case of a fire.
  • Obtain an up-to-date fire extinguisher.
  • In case of fire, have flashlights and battery-powered lights ready to use, instead of candles.
