There are new rules for seven miles of the carpool lane on the often crowded 60 freeway in Moreno Valley.

For now, any vehicle with a single passenger can use the carpool lane during off peak hours. No special stickers. No particular car. It's a stretch of road that is often a traffic mess.

"It doesn't even take an accident. It takes somebody pulled over with one extra car there, and people stop and look, and it kills us on traffic," said commuter Mark Alspaugh.

Off peak for the seven miles of freeway between Day Street and Redlands Boulevard is between 9am and 4pm.

"Well then is it really considered a carpool lane anymore?" said commuter Glae Koenig. "It's just a regular lane now isn't it then?"

Her question is a good one. So here's the answer.

The carpool on the 60 is fair game for everyone overnight, and between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

It's still exclusive to carpools and zero emission vehicles mornings 6am to 9am, and evenings 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
