A man who was arrested last year at John Wayne Airport while allegedly trying to board a flight to Istanbul, Turkey, with a fake passport was indicted Wednesday on a charge of trying to provide support to the ISIS terrorist group.
Adam Dandach, 21, of Orange, had previously been indicted on charges of making a false statement on a passport application and using a passport obtained through a false statement.
In the superseding indictment returned Wednesday by a federal grand jury in Santa Ana, Dandach was charged with a single count of attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization, two counts of making a false statement on a passport application obtained to facilitate international terrorism and a single count of obstruction of justice for allegedly trying to destroy records after his arrest last July.
Dandach is scheduled to be arraigned March 16.
He has been jailed without bond since July 2014. When he was arrested last year, he allegedly told federal agents he was traveling to Syria to pledge his allegiance and assistance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, "and that he believed the killings of American soliders are justified," according to court papers.
According to the new indictment, Dandach also tried to obstruct the investigation into his activities by instructing a website administrator to delete his post history, authorities said.
Dandach faces 15 years in federal prison on the material-support charge, 25 years on each of the passport fraud charges and up to 25 years on the obstruction of justice charge.
