Residents Evacuated in 12-Hour Standoff With Man Who Crashed Car, Led Officers on Brief Pursuit

A man armed with a knife who led police on a brief pursuit was taken into custody early Monday after an overnight 12-hour standoff, authorities said

The man could be seen being wheeled out of the apartment around 6 a.m.

The incident began about 12 hours earlier on Sunday with a crash in the 600 block of Glassell Street, where the apparently intoxicated man confronted responding officers with a knife, said Orange police Lt. Dan Adams. The suspect got back into his car and led police on a pursuit to his apartment building in the 200 block of South Lemon Street, where he abandoned the vehicle, threatened officers with the knife and ran inside his apartment, Adams said.

A SWAT team responded and evacuated the building and another next door. Crisis negotiators worked to talk the man out of the apartment, the lieutenant said.

Video showed residents wrapped in blankets standing outside the apartment complex during a cool overnight. Some stayed at a Red Cross shelter.

His removal from the apartment was preceded by a blast. Police later said tear gas was used during the standoff.

The suspect was booked on suspicion of felony evading, brandishing a weapon and assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.
