Over 700 LA County-USC Patients' Personal Information Stolen in Car Break-In

Over 700 LA County-USC Medical Center patients' personal information was compromised after an employee's vehicle was broken into, county health officials said Monday.

Appointment lists that contained 743 patients' full names, birth dates, medical record numbers, phone numbers, genders, clinics and appointment information were stolen from an employee's vehicle on July 8, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.

Patients' social security numbers and financial information were not included in the documents.

"We are committed to protecting patient privacy and will take every necessary step to prevent a similar occurrence from happening again," said LAC+USC Medical Center chief executive Dan Castillo. "We have provided notice to impacted patients with resources to contact for information."

The privacy breach affected patients that were treated at the County-USC Neurosurgery Clinic between May 10 and July 26.

The Department of Health Services sent letters to the affected patients and also posted a notice on its website for patients whose mailing addresses were not available.

Patients can call the medical center at 844-345-4600 for more information.
