P-22 Makes Overnight Return to LA Zoo

The famed mountain lion is the prime suspect in the mauling death of an adult koala earlier this month.

Griffith Park’s resident mountain lion has made yet another overnight visit to the Los Angeles Zoo.

P-22 was spotted by zoo security north of the Zoo Grill about 1:30 a.m. Friday, according to zoo director John Lewis.

No images were available of his midnight stroll, but Lewis said he did not bother any of the zoo’s more permanent residents.

The famed mountain lion is widely suspected in the death of a 14-year-old female koala found mauled 400 yards from its enclosure earlier this month.

Zoo workers first spotted P-22 about a month earlier on surveillance footage that monitors outside wildlife.

Lewis said at the time it was unclear how the adult mountain lion was getting in and out of the zoo.

Extra precautions have been taken since the koala’s death to better secure animals in a safe place overnight.
