Palmdale Man Arrested in Neighbor's Shooting Death

The two men had been drinking alcohol in a garage before an argument that led to the shooting

An argument involving two neighbors led to a shooting Tuesday night in Palmdale that left one dead.

Homicide detectives responded to the 159th Street East (map) home after a man allegedly shot and killed his next-door neighbor. The victim's 13-year-old daughter witnessed part of the altercation.

The two men were consuming alcohol in the victim's garage before the shooting, according to investigators.

"After their verbal disagreement, then suspect returned and shot the victim," said Lt Eddie Hernandez.

The shooting was reported at about 8:20 p.m. in the Lake Los Angeles section of Palmdale. Two rounds were fired and a handgun was recovered, according to authorities.

The suspect was identified as 58-year-old Michael Norton. He was booked on suspicion of murder and held on $1 million bail.

A court appearance was scheduled for Thursday, according to jail records.

The victim was identified as 46-year-old William Kenneth Mayes, pictured at right in a DMV photo, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office. His 13-year-old daughter was outside the home, and a 16- and 12-year-old daughter were inside the residence.
