Hazardous Materials Team Responds to Pasadena Courthouse

A firefighter was being evaluated on scene for unknown injuries, officials said.

A hazardous materials team responded to the Pasadena Courthouse Monday morning after a fire that led to nearby street closures.

Smoke was reported at the 300 block of East Walnut Street in Pasadena just after 1:30 a.m. Monday, officials said. Firefighters discovered the smoke was coming out of the courthouse, and firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, Pasadena Fire Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian said.

Firefighters located what may be hazardous materials on a level of the courthouse, Derderian said. The incident was then upgraded to a two-alarm hazardous materials situation after firefighters noticed a hazardous materials sign in the area of the fire.

Fire officials confirmed that a firefighter was being evaluated on scene for unknown injuries.

Streets surrounding the area of the courthouse has been closed off for an unknown duration of time. The courthouse will be on a "modified schedule" Monday, with "public and staff being directed as quickly as possible,'' the city of Pasadena reported.

Matters involving in-custody defendants have been transferred to Depts. 117 and 118 of the Criminal Courts Building in downtown Los Angeles, according to the court's Public Information Office. Delinquency hearings for detained juveniles have been transferred to the Eastlake Courthouse, 1601 Eastlake Ave., Los Angeles.

Civil and family law matters and all other criminal and juvenile cases will be handled in six courtrooms in the older portion of the Pasadena Courthouse. Jurors will be assisted by court staff outside the building.
