Lanes Reopen After Pedestrian Fatality on 5 Freeway Prompts Closures

A man was standing in the center divide when he was fatally struck

A pedestrian was struck and killed on the 5 (Santa Ana) Freeway in the city of Commerce Tuesday morning, prompting officials to close most lanes of the freeway during morning rush hour.

The man was in the center divider when a car struck him just before 4 a.m. near the Slauson Avenue exit, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Three northbound lanes near Garfield Avenue were closed until 7 a.m., snarling morning rush hour traffic past the 605 Freeway interchange into Norwalk, CHP officials said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The reason the man was in the divider was not immediately known.
