Pet food reserves at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (SPCALA) are dangerously low.
The charity is appealing for people to make donations during the festive season, when demand tends to be especially high.
Food can be dropped off at any SPCALA location, while monetary donations for pet food can be made here. It needs both dry and wet pet food for dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies.
"We are taking in more animals than ever before," said Madeline Bernstein, SPCALA President. "These animals have been though trauma. Whether it is becoming lost from their family, or suffering from abuse and neglect. It is our mission to nurture and protect them and we need the public's help to do that."
SPCALA uses an average of 40,000 pounds of pet food a year, which feeds about 500 animals a day at its three pet adoption locations, plus the animals at Long Beach Animal Care Services.
When there is a surplus the charity distributes food to local animal rescue groups who are participants in their food bank program.
Unopened pet food donations can be dropped off at any SPCALA location during business hours.
