A man who was in a hourslong standoff with police on the roof of a Sylmar home after leading a dangerous chase in opposing lanes of traffic was taken into custody early Friday.

SWAT officers talked the man off the roof in the area of Oro Grande Street and Brussels Avenue at around 1 a.m. and took him into custody without force, according to Sgt. James Bender of the LAPD Mission Division.

The man, who has not been identified, is in his 20's and from Pacoima, Bender said. He allegedly kidnapped his girlfriend at around 1 p.m. Thursday and reportedly dragged her from a home and into an SUV.

Authorities spotted the vehicle at around 7 p.m., and a chase began. Aerial footage shows the suspect speeding through opposing lanes of traffic along central San Fernando Valley before he crashed into a stop sign.

During the standoff, the man gestured to police who were on the ground while police stood with guns drawn at a home in the San Fernando Valley. At one point police threw a hose up to the man who took a drink, then wrapped it around his neck before throwing the hose down to the ground.

The female victim was in the SUV during the chase, according to Bender. The injuries she sustained was from the kidnapping and not the chase, he added. She was expected to be OK.

The man was booked into jail and is facing kidnapping charges, Bender said.
