Police rescued a puppy in a locked car in Pomona early today and subsequently arrested the owner of the vehicle after finding a gun and drugs inside.
Police received a call about a puppy locked in a car without an owner present at 12:50 a.m. in the 100 block of West Second Street, according to the Pomona Police Department.
Responding officers found the vehicle with the puppy locked inside and spotted a blue steel revolver in plain sight, police said.
The owner arrived and was detained. During a search of the gray 1998 Lexus, officers found a semi-automatic assault rifle, a revolver, 1 ounce of marijuana, about $5,000 in cash and roughly 18 gross grams of cocaine packaged for sales, police said.
Officers arrested 24-year-old Jose Garcia-Vargas of Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of possessing a firearm with narcotics and an assault rifle, as well as possessing drugs for sale. He was taken to the Pomona City Jail for booking, police said.
The puppy was unharmed and released to a family member, police added.
