Police Horses Struck During Late Night Brawl in Santa Ana

Two police horses were struck during a large fight that broke out on streets crowded with late-night bar patrons in downtown Santa Ana on Sunday, according to police.

The altercation began at around 2 a.m. as bars were closing on 3rd and Broadway and hundreds of people filled the streets. Police say they are not sure what prompted the fight.

A Santa Ana Police mounted unit spotted the fight and called for backup. A police horse named Chex was punched or slapped during the altercation. Chex was "unfazed" and continued working at the scene. A second horse, Willa, was "assaulted" during the incident, police said.

The person who allegedly struck Chex was arrested for committing an unlawful act against a police animal. Five other people were also arrested on charges including public drunkenness and resisting arrest, police said.
