Police Investigate Beating Death of Man in Walmart

Officers responded to the call of a serious assault around 4:47 p.m. at the Lakewood Walmart

Police are investigating what led to the apparent beating death of a man inside a Walmart store Tuesday afternoon.

Officers responded to the call of a serious assault around 4:47 p.m. at the Lakewood Walmart on 2770 East Carson Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The incident occurred in the sporting goods section of the store. A customer at the scene told the NBC4 that it appeared as though a man was beaten to death with a baseball bat.

The victim, described as a 74-year-old while male, was pronounced dead at the scene and a 46-year-old male suspect, who was found outside the store, was detained pending further investigation, sheriff's deputies said.

"I just saw someone run by and I saw five guys chasing him and it was kind of a flash," customer John Rouse told NBC4 News.

It was not clear what provoked the incident but it was not gang related, sheriff's deputies said.
