Suspicious Device Temporarily Closes Downtown Disney

Geocaching mix-up leads to Disneyland lockdown

A suspicious device was found late Tuesday morning in Downtown Disney, prompting authorities to tell patrons to stay inside until a bomb squad could check out the object.

Anaheim police were called at 11:07 a.m. when Downtown Disney workers came across a small cylindrical object east of the ESPN Zone store and west of the House of Blues, Anaheim police Sgt. Bob Dunn said.

The Orange County bomb squad was summoned to check out the device, Dunn said. In the meantime, access to the area was restricted and shoppers who were already there were told to stay inside, Dunn said.

The bomb squad later determined it was a geocache site and was not a threat, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played around the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices.
