A man covered in blood and shouting "Hitler, President Obama and terrorists" shot and killed a man and critically wounded a woman on Friday before police took him into custody after a shootout in which the gunman was also wounded.

The drama began at 6:40 p.m. in the 7200 block of Canby Avenue in Reseda, police said. Neighbors called police reporting they heard as many as 20 shots fired and a screaming man with a gun, police said.

"We had a man with no shirt, who came out covered in blood head to toe who charged us like a football player,” said Lt. Robert Davis, of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Division. “Officers showed a lot of restraint."

LAPD Capt. John Egan said it took several officers and a stun gun to restrain the man after a gun battle with officers.

Neighbor Erik Correa said the man was running with his hands in the air.

“Didn't want to get shot,” Correa said. ”Smart enough to put his hands up."

Police were trying to figure out what set the man off. Officers did not say what relationship the man had with the victims.

The woman was the apartment property manager, police said.

Aerial footage showed a brief foot chase that ended with a man in custody. Police said the man was unarmed when he was handcuffed, but a pistol was recovered from the scene.
