Police Officer Injured in Long Beach Shootout

A police officer was hospitalized in stable condition following shootout in Long Beach on Sunday night, police said.

Two officers were responding to a report of a disturbance when they were shot at, Long Beach Police Department officials said. Officers returned fired and struck the gunman, who was also hospitalized in stable condition.

Neighbors told NBC4 the gunfire sounded like fireworks.

"I just thought they were shooting fireworks," said resident Faith, who declined to provide her last name. "I kept hearing, 'Boom, boom, boom, boom.' I didn't think too much of it, then I got ready to go to bed and I saw the police lights out here, and I thought, OK, they weren't fireworks."

More than a dozen police cruisers lined the street at Artesia Boulevard and Hammond Avenue (map), where Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies were assisting the Long Beach Police Department in the investigation.

Long Beach police went on a brief citywide tactical alert following the shooting.
