The driver of a stolen car led officers on an erratic 30-minute pursuit ending in Van Nuys on Monday afternoon.
The high-speed pursuit ended after the suspect crashed the 2013 Chevrolet Volt head-on into an LAPD vehicle.
The chase began around 3:09 p.m. at Ventura Boulevard and Amestoy Avenue in Encino. The pursuit ended around 3:40 p.m. in the San Fernando Valley when the driver slammed head-on into an LAPD SUV.
Officers had their guns drawn as the suspect refused to exit the stolen car following the smoky crash on Keswick Street west of Burnet Avenue in Van Nuys.
"We waited patiently for him to come out," Sgt. Megan Glaister of the LAPD said.
After a 10-minute standoff, police finally broke the driver's side window using a bean bag shotgun and dragged the driver out of the car and took him into custody.
The suspect was using a sharp object to injure himself, police said.
One officer was slightly injured from the impact of the crash and was placed in a neck brace before being taken to a hospital.
