Hit-and-Run Driver Sought in Crash That Killed Woman, Injured Children

The driver of a Ford Mustang GT left that scene after the fatal crash near the Irvine Spectrum Center

Helicopter crews and search dogs joined the manhunt for a driver who fled a three-car crash that killed a woman and seriously injured two children in Irvine Wednesday night.

The collision took place at Alton Parkway and Muirlands Boulevard, near the Irvine Spectrum Center, officials with the Irvine Police Department said.

When officers arrived, they found a black Ford Mustang with severe front-end damage, but the driver, believed to be a man in his 20s, was missing, authorities said.

"If you know where he is, please reach out to law enforcement," said Farrah Emani, spokeswoman for the Irvine Police Department. "This is a really tragic scene ... it's really important to us that we locate him."

A 58-year-old woman who was riding in a Chevrolet SUV was killed, police said. Another woman and two children she was riding with were taken to the hospital in a serious condition. The children were a 2-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl. Their relation to the women in the car has yet to be confrimed.

A woman in her 30s who was in a Honda Civic was rescued from the vehicle and taken to a trauma center. She has since been released.

Police set up a perimeter in search of the Mustang driver, but he was not apprehended. The driver remained outstanding at noon. There are no cameras or homes on the stretch of road where the crash occurred, and no witnesses.

The owner of the Ford was located but was determined not to be the driver, authorities said.
