Suspected Gunman Arrested After Hourslong Standoff in South Los Angeles Following Chase

Following an hourslong search, police arrested a suspected gunman Thursday who ran from an SUV involved in a crash at the end of a chase in South Los Angeles.

The crash occurred just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of Western Avenue and 65th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The SUV ended up on its side and one person who was inside was arrested but a second, believed to be armed, ran off, according to LAPD Officer Tony Im and reports from the scene.

Police cordoned off the area and evacuated homes near a shed where the suspect was believed to be hiding.

Authorities spent hours trying to communicate with the suspect, who was wanted in connection with a fight that broke out in a nearby neighborhood. According to police, the potentially armed man was threatening people with a gun

Police used tear gas, a taser and less-than-lethal bean bag rounds to arrest the suspect, who may now face a felony.

The suspect was taken into custody about 9 p.m., police said.

It was unclear if anyone was seriously injured in the crash.
