Poor Air Quality Leads to Burn Ban in Some SoCal Counties

The ban is in effect for Friday

Unhealthy air quality has prompted an alert urging residents in some Southern California counties not to burn wood in their fireplaces Friday, officials said.

The no-burn advisory was issued to all of Orange County and non-desert portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

The alert is part of the agency’s “Check Before You Burn” program, which is designed to protect the public from potentially harmful wood smoke from home fireplaces. Wood smoke contains hundreds of contaminants, including a pollutant that increases the risk of heart attacks and early death, the agency said.

Residents unsure if they are affected by the alert can check by entering their zip code at www.aqmd.gov.
