Port Expansion to Create 5,700 Jobs
The project includes a terminal expansion from 72 to 142 acres

A $47.6 million expansion project at the Port of Los Angeles will create more than 5,700 jobs and improve air quality at the port, officials said Friday.
A construction contract for the project at the port's China Shipping terminal was awarded Thursday to Santa Fe Springs-based Griffith/Dutra by the Los Angeles Harbor Commission.
The project includes a terminal expansion from 72 to 142 acres, along with an additional 2,500 feet of wharf space that will increase capacity to a maximum of 1.5 million 20-foot containers.
The project also includes the development of a community park in San Pedro, the implementation of a Beautification Plan along several nearby corridors, landscaping improvements along Front Street parallel to the terminal's perimeter and several environmental measures.
“In a difficult economy, this contract puts people to work and will ultimately create one of the world's most modern and environmentally friendly container terminals,” said Port Executive Director Geraldine Knatz.
The project is expected to create 1,643 construction jobs and 4,065 permanent positions after the expansion is completed.
