Positive Plates: Heath's Dinnerware Exchange

Donate a dish, receive a discount on the same, and help the Skid Row Housing Trust.

Many a fine homegrown company is associated with California, and many of those are committed to making where we live a better place.

One such outfit? Heath Ceramics, which was founded in Sausalito by ceramist Edith Heath in 1948. The quality dishware line, which is famed for its hallmark sheen, its understated beauty, and solid heft, is still made in the Bay Area community. But you don't need to journey north to buy it: The Los Angeles showroom is located on Beverly Boulevard between Fairfax and La Brea avenues.

And come August each year, the Heath store kicks off its Home Plate Dinnerware Exchange Program in support of the Skid Row Housing Trust, the "non-profit permanent supportive housing provider in downtown LA."

How it works: Visit Heath Ceramics at any point from Aug. 1 through Aug. 31. Have dishware you'd like to donate with you -- bowls, plates, cups. Give to the store, and then get 25 percent off a corresponding piece of Heath dishware.

Donated a bowl? Get a discount on a Heath bowl. Donated a plate? Same deal.

Your donated dishes then go to the Skid Row trust, where they are given to "former homeless residents during four separate 'Dish Depot' days at the Trust's Star apartments, where residents can choose dish sets to take back to their new homes."

Over 16,000 pieces have been donated since the Home Plate exchange program started four years ago. And to celebrate the half-decade anniversary of the give-back, domestic-nice drive? Heath on Beverly will throw an opening night reception on Friday, Aug. 1.
