Possible Heavy Rains Prompt Silverado Canyon Evacuation Advisory

Officials in Orange County have issued an evacuation advisory ahead of possible heavy rains, flooding and mudslides Friday night.

Only residents will be able to enter the affected area, homes east of 30311 Silverado Canyon Road in Cleveland National Forest, after 9 p.m., the according to a news release from the Orange County CEO and Sheriff.

The announcement cited a National Weather Service forecast that up to three quarters of an inch of rain overnight, an amount that "could produce flooding and debris flows."

"Evacuation routes can quickly become impassable due to mud debris or flooding," it continued.

Sandbags are available for canyon residents at the OC Fire Authority's Station 14 at 29402 Silverado Canyon Road as well as at the intersection of Santiago Canyon and Modjeska Canyon roads.

The public information hotline, at 714-628-708, will be staffed starting at 3 p.m., according to the release.
