Proposed Huntington Beach Desalination Plant Passes Key Test

The lease hearing brought out hundreds of people for and against the project

A lease for a large-scale desalination plant in Huntington Beach was granted Thursday by the State Lands Commission. The plant will produce enough water for about 400,000 people a day, NBC4's media partner KPCC reports.

The lease hearing brought out hundreds of citizens who both supported and contested the project.

Former Senator Barbara Boxer says the plant would be beneficial in emergency events that may leave homes without drinkable water, citing the hurricane in Puerto Rico that left its residents without a safe drinking source.

Opponents say the plant will harm marine life, surrounding neighborhoods and discourage water conservation.

To minimize marine life endangerment, Poseidon plans to install a wedge wire screen over the intake pipe which will slow down the speed of water entering the pipe.
