The month-long Muslim fast of Ramadan is almost over. On Sunday Muslims in the Southland and around the world will celebrate the end of Ramadan with family gatherings and communal prayers.

The end of Ramadan, when Muslims abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from sunrise to sunset, is a one-day holiday known as Eid ul- Fitr, or the feast of fast-breaking.

It is a day when "Muslims exchange social visits and seek to strengthen bonds of brotherhood in the community," according to the greater Los Angeles Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
