LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines to Step Down

Ramon Cortines, 82, replaced embattled John Deasy as superintendent in late 2014

Superintendent Ramon Cortines will resign in six months after coming out of retirement late last year to take over the nation's second-largest school district, a Los Angeles Unified School District spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

Cortines made the surprise announcement Tuesday during a budget meeting with the school board, according to the Daily News. Details regarding a search for a replacement and timeline were not immediately available.

The school voted earlier this week to extend Cortines’ contract through the end of the  upcoming school year.

Cortines, 82, replaced embattled John Deasy as superintendent in October.

Deasy resigned after more than three years on the job after facing allegations of ethical violations made against him in connection with the district's $1.3 billion iPad program. The plan involved an ambitious effort to provide all LAUSD students and staff with iPads or laptops.

In addition to Los Angeles, Cortines has previously been at the helm of school systems in San Francisco, San Jose, New York and Pasadena.
