Toddler Severely Burned; Grandfather Arrested

Left Untreated, Boy's Burns Worsened

A Rancho Cucamonga grandfather was arrested on suspicion of child abuse after taking his severely burned grandson to the hospital, police said.

Jerry Ortiz Villareal, 45, was arrested after taking his 2-year-old grandson to a hospital, police said. The boy had second-degree burns on large portions of his body, said Deputy Jacob Bailey, a spokesman with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. He was in critical condition.

"Villareal claimed the victim was burned with boiling water from the stove several days prior, but Villareal failed to seek medical attention for him," authorities said in a news release.

As a result, the victim's injuries became more severe and he was airlifted to a burn unit in Northern California for a higher level of care.
