3 in Custody After Rancho Palos Verdes Panga Boat Discovery

Three people are in custody Tuesday evening after a small boat, called a panga, carrying a suspicious load ran aground off Malaga Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Shortly after 4 p.m., the San Diego Coast Guard spotted a fast-moving vessel headed north along the coast.

A pair of U.S. Coast Guard boats – one from the north, the other from the south – cornered the panga boat, which was forced to make a sharp left turn into Malaga Cove where it was beached, Eggers said.

Dozens of suspicious packages were found on board. Officials said they believe the packages could hold narcotics.

Officers from the Rancho Palos Verdes Estates Police Department were on land waiting to speak with the crew members, who were ultimately taken into custody.
