Man in Custody After Reported Bomb Threat at Bank

Police fired beanbag rounds to subdue a bank robbery suspect Monday outside a Chase branch in downtown Los Angeles.

Police were called to the bank near Ninth and Hill streets around 9:40 a.m. The man told bank employees he had explosives strapped to his body. Responding officers spotted the man on a sidewalk outside the bank.

Police fired at least one beanbag round at the man, who fell to the ground and was taken into custody. Officers said they fired after they said he told them there was an explosive in the bag and he tossed a wad of cash into the air.

Bomb squad techs had to secure the suitcase and the building and check for an accomplice the man had claimed was inside. They found neither.

There was no immediate reports of any injuries.

The incident took Hernan Camacho by surprise. Camacho, who was working as a set decorator for a Buick commercial being shot downtown, was confused at first in a town where movie and commercial shoots take place daily.

"I didn't think much about it until it started to escalate," he said.
