Reports of Green-Blue Streak of Light Across SoCal Sky Could Be Meteor

Reports of a mysterious greenish-blue light streaking across the sky poured in from all over Southern California Thursday morning, prompting a slew of questions on social media.

Residents in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Ventura and San Diego counties took to social media to report the sighting shortly after 6:30 a.m.

Commuters in Downey, Irvine and Hesperia, to name a few, said they spotted the light while on Southern California freeways.

Speculations quickly sprung about what the light could be, as some pointed to a shooting star, a meteor and even aliens.

The American Meteor Society reported on its website it had received more than150 reports of a bright fireball seen over California and Arizona early Thursday morning.

Dr. Ed Krupp, director of the Griffith Observatory said there was no confirmation on what the object was but that is was most likely coming from a natural cause.

According to Krupp, the "green streak" might have been a bright meteor or space debris that fell into the atmosphere.

"This happens every day but it happened today at a time when people were out driving to work and saw it," said Krupp.
