Rescued Siberian Husky Shot Several Times, Loses Tail in Surgery

Dog will soon need permanent home

A rescued Siberian Husky who was found with pellet and gunshot wounds is on the mend after surgery but will need a permanent home.

The husky, named Stella, was found as a stray and taken to a shelter in San Jacino. No one came forward and claimed her. She was later transported to Riverside County Rescue Shelter so that canine rescuers could pick her up.

It was initially believed the husky was wounded from an attack by other dogs. X-rays showed three gunshot wounds and hundreds of buckshots embedded inside the dog.

It was unknown who shot the husky.

The dog was transported to Apple Valley where veterinarians removed many of the pellets and shrapnel, but could not remove all of them. Doctors had to also amputate the dog's tail.

Some of the pellets contained lead. Veterinarians said there was a 30 percent chance Stella could develop lead poisoning from her wounds.

Stella is still with veterinarians. She will be taken in by a board member in San Pedro before the shelter finds her a new, permanent home some time this month.
