Nearly 10,000 reusable bags are being handed out across Los Angeles Monday to raise awareness for the citywide single-use, plastic bag ban starting next year.
Heal the Bay, partnering with the city’s bureau of sanitation, are handing out the recyclable bags in every city council district, urging holiday shoppers to ditch the soon-to-be banned bags.
The Children’s Nature Institute, Los Angeles Beautification Team, Punk Rock Marthas, and several other groups are participating in the bag distribution.
The ban will go into effect Jan. 1, 2014 for large stores that make more than $2 million per year or occupy retail space larger than 10,000 square feet. Smaller stores will see the ban go into effect July 1, 2014.
An environmental report conducted by the city states an estimated 2 billion single-use plastic bags are used in Los Angeles each year.
