$50,000 Reward Offered in Hit-and-Run That Killed Father

Authorities identified a suspect based on witness account of the July crash at a Koreatown bus stop

A $50,000 reward was announced Wednesday in the case of a hit-and-run crash that killed a father of two children in July.

The crash that killed 45-year-old Javier Hernandez occurred at the intersection of Beverly Boulevard and Normandie Avenue in Koreatown. There have been no arrests in the nearly two-month investigation to find the driver who ran a red light, struck two vehicles and crashed into a group of people near a bus stop.

Authorities have identified the driver as 38-year-old Fredy Mendez. The reward approved Wednesday by the Los Angeles City Council is for information leading to his arrest. He was identified by witness at the crash site, who said he left the scene and his Ford F150 pickup after striking at least three people at the bus stop, including Hernandez.

Family members described Hernandez as respectful and the sole provider for his wife and two children.

Mendez is from El Salvador and entered the United States illegally, according to investigators. He also has family members in Los Angeles.
