Riverside County Reports First Case of Zika Virus

Riverside County has its first case of Zika.

Public health officials there said on Monday a 50-year-old man who recently traveled to the Caribbean tested positive for the virus.

The patient, who lives in the southwest side of the county, likely became infected during his travels to the Dominican Republic, where Zika-infected mosquitoes are present, the Riverside University Health System-Public Health office said. He is expected to make a full recovery.

"While Riverside County is one of the last counties in Southern California to have a confirmed case, we always knew it would happen eventually," County Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser said in a news release.

There have been no locally acquired Zika cases in the continental U.S., the agency said.
