Riverside Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting Girl in Restaurant Bathroom

A 34-year-old man was accused Monday of sexually assaulting a child at a restaurant where he works, police said.

The Riverside Police Department responded to a restaurant at 1766 University Avenue where a child was allegedly sexually assaulted by an employee.

Police said at about 12:20 p.m., the girl entered the bathroom in the restaurant, and a short time after the mother went to check on her and found the victim inside with the suspected attacker, later identified as an employee.

The suspect, Avimael Lopez, 34, was accused of oral copulation or sexual penetration with a child younger than 10, kidnapping, and engaging in lewd acts with a child.

He is being held at $2 million bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside and is scheduled to be arraigned later this month.

Detectives of the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit accused Lopez of assaulting the girl in the bathroom while her mother was not present.
