A police lieutenant who pleaded guilty to drunken driving last week was sentenced to three years probation and 15 days with an ankle monitoring bracelet, the Riverside County district attorney's office said.
Riverside Police Lt. Larry Gonzalez pleaded guilty last Friday and will also attend a Mothers Against Drunk Driving panel as part of his sentence.
Gonzalez, a 20-year veteran of the department, was off-duty in the early hours of Feb. 3 when he crashed a city-owned SUV into a mailbox and retaining wall in the 6700 block of Rycroft Drive, said Riverside Police spokesman Lt. Guy Toussaint.
A field-sobriety test was conducted and officers determined Gonzalez was under the influence of alcohol.
Gonzalez was cited at the scene and his driver's license was taken away.
Gonzalez remains on duty, Toussaint said. He faces discipline from the Riverside Police Department pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
Correction: An earlier version of this report stated Gonzalez was sentenced to three months probation. The district attorney's office later revised that to three years.
