Five people were taken into custody, including one person who was shot during a struggle with a store clerk, following a botched jewelry heist in Fullerton, police said Friday.
The incident happened about 12:15 p.m. at All Phases Jewelers, located at 521 West Commonwealth Ave., Fullerton police Cpl. Tim Kandler said.
The shooting happened during a struggle between an employee and one of the suspected robbers, Kandler said.
The suspected robber, identifed as 23-year-old Nelvin Cook, of Los Angeles, was taken to a hospital where he was being treated.
Police said four other suspects fled in two vehicles -- first, they sped off in a Ford mini-van before abandoning it for a green Chevy Suburban -- and ended up crashing into a parked car near the intersection of Wilshire and Balcom avenues.
The suspects were identified as 21-year-old Randolph Long, of Houston; 22-year-old Devon Ridge, of Compton; 18-year-old Obiesie Enwezor and 20-year-old Jayson Coleman, both from Los Angeles.
They fled on foot, but were taken into custody within a five-block radius of the jewelry store, Kandler said.
